    Keynote Speaker – How Leaders can help be Change Agents for a Positive Safety Culture 

    withersDr. Jim Withers has been an Industrial Hygienist & Safety Professional for over 28 years. His educational background includes a B.A. in Biology from Luther College and a M.S. in Preventive Medicine & Environmental Health (emphasis in Industrial Hygiene) from the University of Iowa. Dr. Withers also holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Technology from Iowa State University where his doctoral research focused on learning and retention differences between students taking chemical safety training on a computer versus in the classroom. Dr. Withers is both a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and has guest/adjunct faculty appointments at Iowa State University and Columbia Southern University. Professional passions include Industrial Hygiene, Maximizing Training Effectiveness, Human Behavior & Safety, Leadership in Safety and Organizational Safety Culture. Currently, Jim is the Corporate HSE Director for the American Packaging Corporation in Story City, Iowa. He and his wife, Jenifer, have 4 sons and live in Ames.

    OSHA Safe + Sound Update

    and How to Link Wellness and Safety with Performance Metrics

     

    The Nebraska Safety Council is pleased to feature nationally-recognized expert Richard Kersh and Regional OSHA Director, Jeff Funke. In recognition of OSHA Safe and Sound Week, Jeff will be providing the latest OSHA updates and Dr. Kersh will demonstrate how wellness and safety are integral to performance metrics.

    Alan Ellison with Hearing Testing Inc. will be onsite with his mobile testing unit and will be open for tours, as well as both fit testing and hearing testing.

    Orthus Health is a population health management and data analytics company that provides a suite of population health management services to employers, benefits brokers, wellness providers and risk management organizations. Richard has developed a proprietary technique for analyzing risk data elements that measures the financial efficacy of a wellness or risk intervention. This powerful tool has enabled employers to significantly reduce their healthcare costs through the utilization of evidence- and outcomes-based medicine along with workers compensation claims by creating or modifying existing safety programs.

    Richard has also led or been a key author of projects that include the development of customized health risk appraisals, physical ability tests to help prevent workers compensation claims before they occur, a patent-pending methodology for measuring the financial efficacy of wellness programming, and has consulted with various well-known academic institutions with regard to Population Health Management programs.

    The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

     

    Jeff Funke is currently the Area Director for the Omaha, Nebraska Office of OSHA.  Mr. Funke began his career with OSHA in 2001 as an Industrial Hygienist in the Billings, Montana Area Office.  During his 15-year tenure with the agency, Funke has served as Assistant Area Director for the Mobile, Alabama Area Office and as the Area Director in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Funke has a Master’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene from Montana Tech of the University of Montana and a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health for Boise State University.  Mr. Funke has been a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) since 2005.
